There's a like button added to the forum - look to the top right for a thumbs-up, that'll show you approve of a post. You can't thank your own posts naturally enough :)

To get email notifications of new additions to the forums, for each of the forums that you want notifications from, scroll to the bottom and click the "Subscribe Forum".

You can do the same thing with the topics that are listed in the forums. If you want to follow a particular topic, click on the "Subscribe Topic" at the same place on the bottom left of the topic page.

Where might I find the thank button or must one be of the privileged sort to access such a feature?

It should be on the top right of the posts. Just to the left of the avatar. It's a little thumbs up. You should have it but I didn't have it for a few days either
Sheep, like all wool-bearing animals, instinctively travel north, where it's colder, and they won't be so stuffy.

It's likely to be a local browser issue based on what I've seen already. If you don't see it, try a ctrl+F5 to force a refresh that bypasses the browser's cache.

Mike Shaw is wrong.

When composing a new post, there's a section underneath, where you can upload attachments.
See here:
The section in the post editor where you can upload files (including pictures)
The section in the post editor where you can upload files (including pictures)
This picture was uploaded to the forum and placed inline. Pretty easy :)
