Hey guys, so it’s that time of the year again where we need to start thinking about getting the varsities cup back to its home in UL! This year things have changed where instead of having 4 people on a team with a minimum of 1 girl, in freestyle and boater x there will be 6 competitors with a minimum of 2 girls (whitewater and polo remain the same). Instead of having a system where girls will be awarded an extra few percent on top of their time, there will be two completely separate leagues. A female winner in their category will be awarded 100 points and a male winner in the same event will be awarded another 100 points.

Obviously to have the best shot at winning we need to have the best teams possible. For whitewater we will hold trials on the Upper Bandon in January. This will run on two different Sundays to ensure that everybody who wants a spot can make it. These dates are provisionally the 9th January and 16th January 2022. You only have to come to one! YOU WILL NOT MAKE THE TEAM IF YOU DO NOT ATTEND TRIALS. Everyone has been given plenty of notice so let’s get out practicing and do this!

Amazing, can't wait!!!

2 questions though:

1) What if water levels are very different on the 2 days?

2) Whats the plan on deciding the gender divide for the team, since an individual could be slower in trials than an individual of the other gender but still rank higher in their respective race?

To try out forward an answer for you Jill,

1) water levels will be assessed closer to the time and if there is a discrepancy this can be evaluated by those taking part to ensure a fair competition.

2) this will be at the discretion of the captain/safety officer/team leads after the trials. It will all depend on the results of the trials and a decision will be made from there.
If you can style a rapid but you can't run it upside down, you haven't really run it then, have you?
