ULKC is the University of Limerick Kayak Club. We’ve been in operation in UL since 1975.
ULKC is based in the University of Limerick. The aim of the Kayak Club is to introduce UL students to the many facets of kayaking. Over 250 students join the kayak club each year and of those, more than a quarter choose to continue active involvement in the club. That number doesn’t include the active group of associated paddlers such as all the OFB’s, the social members (people who don’t paddle but go on trips) and our external members. The club is affiliated with the Irish Canoe Union and the International Canoe Federation.
The Club is mainly funded by the Students Union, the Sports Department, members contributions and sponsorship from external companies. Money is largely spent on purchasing, repairing and replacing equipment and subsidising club trips, activities and training courses. These moneys, activities and assets are controlled by the Committee, which is elected at the Club AGM held every February after the Intervarsities.
We have won the Irish Kayak Intervarsities for the last 8 years in a row.
We go on multiple international trips each year expanding the horizons of our new paddlers and giving some fantastic experience to our older experienced members.
We help to support local and international charities with fundraising events.
We organise the annual Shannon River Clean-Up run out of the UL campus each year.
We provide safety cover at races such as the Hell of the West triathlon, Sean O’Sullivan memorial swim and the last Special Olympics.
We have multiple paddlers in the club that have represented their country in varying disciplines and categories
What we do and how to join:
We have pool sessions three times per week during term, 21:45 – 22:45 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
There are often river trips during the week – see our forums for details on when these may be arranged.
